How to Play Part 1: The Timer
The Timer
======
During combat a timer will be slowly counting up the time within the fight. The timer will say who's turn it is next and how long effects have left to go before they wear off.
Taking Turns
========
The duration of character's actions is different depending on the character's Agility stat. Characters with more agility move faster and therefore have to wait only a short time before they can perform their next action since the duration of their actions is shorter. Likewise characters with less agility move slower and therefore have to wait longer before performing their next action since the duration of their actions is longer.
To work this out the duration of a character's action in measured in clicks. A click is exactly 1/4 seconds. A character with high agility will have a shorter duration between moves and therefore fewer clicks. A character with low agility will have a longer duration between moves and therefore more clicks.
First take the number 7 and subtract the value of the character's Agility stat from it to get the number of clicks i.e. 6 Agility is 1 click, 3 Agility is 4 clicks, 0 Agility is 6 clicks and so on.
Then divide the number of clicks by 4 to get the character's Turn Duration in seconds.
The math looks like this
7 - Agility = Turn Duration in clicks
Turn Duration in clicks / 4 = Turn Duration in seconds
When a player performs an action it will not take effect until after the Turn Duration has passed. However the effect may last as long as it takes for the Turn Duration to cue their next move but only exchange stats once during that time period.
Example
=====
Let's say we have a particularly fast Gen soldier called Olga and a particularly slow gen soldier called Hans. One day they get into a fight and start the battle at the exact same time.
Olga has an Agility of 5.
Hans has an Agility of 2.
With Olga..
7 - 5 = 2
So..
7 - 5 points of Agility = 2 Clicks
Then..
2 / 4 = 0.5
So..
2 Clicks / 4 = 0.5 Seconds Turn Duration
With Hans..
7 - 2 = 5
So..
7 - 2 points of Agility = 5 Clicks
Then..
5 / 4 = 1.25
So..
5 Clicks / 4 = 1.25 Seconds Turn Duration
They both started the fight at the same time at 0 seconds and swung at each other
At 0.5 Seconds on the timer Olga's Turn Duration is up and her attack strikes Hans
In her next turn she goes for a block
At 1.0 Seconds on the timer Olga's Turn Duration is up again and she begins to block for 1 turn.
At 1.25 Seconds on the timer Hans' Turn Duration is up and his attack is finally performed but it is blocked by Olga.
Olga's turn is still being carried out but after blocking Hans she is no longer blocking and is merely idling.
Hans opts for a block this time.
At 1.5 Seconds on the timer Olga's Turn Duration is up again and she's free to act again.
This time she goes for an attack
At 2.0 Seconds on the timer Olga's Turn Duration is up and she strikes Hans.
Hans is still waiting for the end of his turn to begin blocking.
Olga attacks again.
At 2.5 Seconds on the timer Olga's Turn Duration is up and she strikes at Hans.
However Hans Turn Duration is also up so he's begun blocking.
Hans blocks Olga's strike but after blocking Olga he is no longer blocking and is merely idling.
Olga opts for another attack, as does Hans.
At 3.0 Seconds on the timer Olga's Turn Duration is up and she strikes at Hans.
Hans' turn is still being carried out but after blocking Olga he is no longer blocking and is merely idling.
Olga's strike lands hitting Hans.
Olga goes for an attack.
At 3.5 Seconds on the timer Olga's Turn Duration is up and she strikes at Hans.
Hans' turn is still being carried out and he's still idling.
Olga's strike lands hitting Hans.
Olga goes for a block before Hans' Turn Duration is up and he attacks.
At 3.75 Seconds on the timer Hans' Turn Duration is up and he strike at Olga.
Olga is still waiting for her Turn Duration to wear out so she can block.
Currently she's idling and so Hans' attack lands unblocked.
